Glossary of terms
(The following terms will make perfect sense as you go through the course.)
Basic Obedience Course
- Recall – to come back to the handler on command.
- Fetch/hold/give – fetch an object on command, hold the object, return to the handler and deliver the object to hand.
Field Training Course
- Dummy – plastic or canvas retrieval dummy used for land & water retrieves.
- Taking a line – teaching the dog to take the most direct route to the dummy.
- The line – refers to the starting point of an exercise.
- Marking – the dog watches the dummy as it is thrown and where it lands - in so doing the dog “marks” the location of the fall.
- Multiple marks – the dog learns to remember more than one location.
- Sight blinds – a retrieve that is not thrown but placed by the handler.
- Handling – hand signals are used to direct the dog.
- Cold blinds – the dog is sent to retrieve an object he has NOT marked or seen placed in the field.
